Soon. (tm)

No one knows. The theory is that beta will start this year, and release next Q2 or Q3 2010. Contrary to what alot of people believe, it's been in development since (ironically) late 2005. LEC/BioWare aren't going to promote a game, especially a big name Star Wars games, and still keep it in development for much longer. The market trends show that developers aren't releasing games until it's in the final stages before beta.

They revealed the first class today, the Bounty Hunter. I'm pretty sure we all saw it coming, but I am rather optimistic about the class this time around (probably because of the jetpack and wrist-mounted flamethrower ).

It is a good read, but the big thing I got out of it was that each faction would have its own unique classes. That means Bounty Hunters will only be Sith. It makes sense not to cross factions and from the blog it doesn't sound like BHs will really be Sith, they will just be working for the Sith. I bet it will make class/faction balance a bit challenging though.
At this point, SWTOR still sounds like it could be a single-player game. It will be nice when we get some actual gameplay info.

I distinctly remember a developer mentioning that you could switch factions, and that a sith could end up with the jedi?
telemchus wrote:Yup, "Which leads me to the third decision we made: No class would exist in both factions – at least at first." Kind of like how Jedi in SWG used to be rebel, but could switch to Imperial.
I take that to mean that they may add the classes to the other side eventually, not that you can switch sides. A Jedi can certainly become a Dark Jedi, but he can never be a member of the Sith Empire. I guess switching sides works for Jedi/Sith, but not so much for the other classes. If a BH goes from Sith to Republic he wouldn't have anything to do. His entire storyline was based on working for the Sith Empire.

They announced Ord Mantell. Not the most exciting annoucement, but I have wanted to visit the planet since it became visible in SWG.
What do you guys think about the possibility of Coruscant being in the game? I don't think any developer will be able to do it justice given our current technology, but I still hope it is in the game in some form. I can't think of a planet that is more Star Wars than Coruscant.

I like Ord Mantell, but the one thing that bothers me from the screenshots and concept art is that underground base. It reminds me too much of Mustafar... I'd rather have Tatooine again... lol
Coruscant couuld be done, but it would be very limited I think. I mean, you'd have to be restricted to walkways, alleys, buildings, hallways, etc. You wouldn't be able to explore much. Of course, to do Coruscant justice you need to go from the gleaming towers to the murky unknown depths and sewers. That is a lot to ask of a game engine. Unless you divide the planet into levels (perhaps upper, mid, and lower levels). Senate chamber and Jedi temple would be on upper layer. Middle class buildings like hotels, apartments, bars, and casinos would be in the mid level. And sewers and other scum would be in the lower level. Each level you would have to load into seperately and you couldn't cross between the two without unloading one and loading another. Well, that's always how I envisioned it actually being possible because loading it all at once would kill the average computer.

I went back this morning and took another look at the new screenshots. I'm still not a fan of the lava (too mustafar-ish...), but what will be evident in SWTOR is that each planet/location is going to be very different and unique. In SWG, every planet was the same... except for Tatooine. I mean, the only difference between the planets in SWG was the color of the grass and how the buildings are painted (Tatooine = sand blasted, Naboo = ivy covered brick, every other planet = same blah concrete...). Or jump to any one of the "adventure planets" in SWG and tell me that one Imperial base with shuttleport is different from another...
It looks like in TOR that everything is going to be unique. I know, only two planets in, but look at the screenshots of Ord Mantell (specifically the base). Not only is it cool to look at but it has a very unique feel compared to everything else we've been shown so far.
