Does the senate and the other house have about the same power in the us style of government?
our PM wants to change it so that our senate is elected (currently all senators are appointed) and I really don't think it's a very good idea as our current system has worked, and continues to work exceptionally well with an elected lower house and appointed upper house.

that is how it use to be. Well actually the upper house was elected by the state legislatures instead of by the people. This was changed by an amendment in the 1800s. Our lower house has more powers that are closer to the people, such as tax bills can only be started in the lower house. While our senate has powers that affect the nation at large, such as declaring war.

Believe it or not, the U.S. government works quite well. It's the people in the government that can cause it to flounder...
