HANS = Head And Neck Support
It is a device used to reduce the amount of travel the skull can go in the event of a high speed accident. When you crash into a concrete wall at 180MPH, there is a large amount of whiplash the accompanies the crash. There is so much whiplash that your neck can break or when your head snaps back, your skull can be subject to a basal skull fracture.
The HANS device is a shoulder harness that attaches itself to a driver's helmet. The device itself is held in place by the shoulder straps of a five point safety harness. When a drive is in a crash, their head can only travel a couple inches in any direction with the device. Without the device, the head can travel to the point of severe injury or death.
This is what likely caused Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s death. When he hit the turn 4 wall at Daytona, his head snapped forward and his neck broke. He died later that day from the injury.

He did not have a HANS device. The HANS device was not a requirement until after his death. While his death was tragic, it caused numerous innovations in safety. The mandate for all drives to use a head and neck restraint was the primary result. Another result was the implementation of SAFER barriers at almost all of the race tracks.
In the beginning (back in the good old days of NASCAR), steel girders like that along highways were used as barriers around the track. The movement to concrete barriers was considered a revolution in safety as it kept the cars on the track. A nasty consequence of the concrete barrier was that when a car hit it going full speed, a driver was going to feel it... hard. The Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barrier is sometimes called a soft wall. The SAFER barrier reduces the impact of a car when it hits the wall. Almost all tracks had concrete walls. Foam pads about 12 inches thick were then attached to the walls and steel beams were then fastened to the foam. This foam and steel beams composed the SAFER barrier. When a vehicle runs into the wall now, the energy is reduced thanks to the foam and the impact is much less. Most tracks now have SAFER barriers installed at least in their turns.
Tracks like Lowes Motor Speedway have the SAFER barrier in the turns, but not the back stretch or the dog legs on the front stretch. If you saw Jamie McMurray crash in the Busch Race this past weekend, you can see the differences of impact. He blew a tire coming off turn four and the car smacked into the SAFER barrier on exit. After bouncing off the wall the car curved down the dog leg and then turned back right in the wall again, but beyond where the SAFER barrier went. The second impact was considerably harder than the first, despite the slower speed.
For more info on the SAFER barrier, check the link.

I'd like to take this time now to post a music video link to one of my favourite all time wrestling matches, Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi.. their series of matches were incredible and this was one of their best. You gotta check out the finisher at the end, sick move called Tiger Driver 91, and the bumps in between are brutal as well. Japanese wrestling is where it's at these days.. it's all about the in ring action rather than entertainment aspect, the story is told in the ring. This is a music video with highlights not the entire match heh..

And I get grief for being a NASCAR fan...
OK, here's a new topic for you. Xbox Live Vision (The Xbox 360's camera) is coming out on September 19th. I've seen how it works with World Series of Poker. You use the camera to take a front and side profile of your face and the camera will apply the pictures to a character in the game. So, when you are playing poker, it looks like you instead of some pre-programmed avatar. That's the cool part about the camera.
The scary part is that you will be able to send not only text and voice messages to your friends, but video and pictures as well. OK, this is cool if you are a responsible human being. But since when has the gaming community ever been responsible??? I imagine there's going to be plenty of homemade porn floating around thanks to this... Of course, if MS actually moderates what is sent, I guess there won't be any issues. Yeah, there's getting your hopes up though...
I can hear that asshole Jack Thompson now...

People over-react too much. I really like the idea, though I can think of a lot better use for bandwidth

I hope it's well moderated, but I'm not getting my hopes up considering half the crap that goes on with Live. I mean, Live is awesome, but you can get some real assholes on there that ruin it for everyone sometimes. It depends on the game though.
The one balancing force that the camera has working for it is that most people who own 360s are male. Unless there's some underground gay thing going on, I doubt you'll see too many guys sending pics or videos of that nature. I feel sorry for everyone woman who owns a 360 and that camera. You know as soon as that camera comes out, every guy is going to be hassling those few girls for pictures or videos. I feel sorry for female gamers, because guys can be real dicks to them online.
