Holocron Help file on PVP Rating

Post by Szul » Thu May 04, 2006 2:11 am

Was bored, found something neat tonight. Dunno if anyone recalls, but I often speak about how worthless PVP Rating is, and where it originally came from. Folks get mad, tell me I'm full of shit and I found this tidbit in the Holocron Help system that backs my ass up:
What is Player versus Player (PvP) Rating?

Player Versus Player Rating is a feature that ranks all players who participate in PvP combat. This rating is specifically used by the Jedi Force Rank System to calculate amounts of Force Rank Experience generated any time a Jedi kills an opponent. All Players will be ranked through this new system. At any time, you can check a player's PvP Rating by typing /showPvPRating. The higher this number is, the more adept the opponent is at PvP combat. Any time a player is victorious in PvP, their rating may increase. However, if a player is not so successful in a PvP encounter, their rating may drop. If multiple players contribute to a kill, their PvP ratings will be increased based off of the damage dealt to the victim by each player. Gaining PvP rating and Force Rank Experience is the key to Ranked Jedi Knight progression.

This was a feature of Publish 9 that was removed about a month later, because Jedi abused the hell out of it by killing Alts on top of their PA Halls to accelerate the raising of their Force Ranking. After Force Rank was removed, PVPers killed alts to inflate their Rating for bragging rights. I'm still giving thought to giving a Trader a 1700+ ranking just to belittle and grief PVPers.

Wow, talk about needin to update the Holocron Help System. I think a better ranking system could be thought up, though I don't have any ideas for it off the top of my head. I do like how the current system doesn't give you any points if you kill the same person over and over again.

I'd be willing to let you kill my alt on a daily basis to accomplish this goal. Heck I'd let ya kill my main too, my pvp rating sux and I really don't care about it anyways.

The PVP rating system was never removed or ever changed, just the Force Ranking portion of it. My intention is to prove my long standing claim that it was never intended for the purpose that people currently believe. Its nothing more than a leftover portion of a brokedick Jedi ranking system that was removed from the game, because it was, and is still, easily exploitable by an Alt "fight club".

Hasn't pvp rating always been in the game? I didn't pvp during year one of swg so I wouldn't know then. I know when I started to pvp in swg's second year there was the same old pvp rating.

Like I said in the original post, it was introduced with Publish 9.

I used poor wording. I should have said "The PVP Rating System was part of the new Force Ranking System that was introduced with Publish 9, but the FRS was removed a month later because Jedi abused..."

In short, with Publish 9 Jedi Revamp, the Jedi was intended to be a perma-Overt PVP Class once they obtained the level of Jedi Knight. How they obtained this ranking was by various complicated means, but it was based on PVP points they gained in fighting for their relative factions.

Points were given for killing non-Jedi Overts of opposite faction. Jedi Knights were rewarded with increased powers as they gained levels in the Force Ranking System, so that was their incentive to farm non-Jedi.

The PVP Rating system was designed, as an afterthought, for the non-Jedi classes, to prevent any "prey on the weak" tactics by the more powerful Jedi, and give Jedi an incentive to hunt more active PVPers to accumulate the higher points.

Unfortunately, Jedi Knight "fight clubs" immediately formed on the roof-tops of Generic PA Halls, we had an entire Dark Jedi PA on Sunrunner that did this, and after a month, a bunch of very powerful Rank 6-9 Jedi Knights appeared and all but ruined the PVP scene.

So SOE pulled the FRS from the game until it could be redesigned. The PVP Rating system remained, however. They said it was too difficult to remove the code and might break a bunch of stuff, and they might want to use it for the new FRS system. So it became popular with duelers and PVP Fight Club players, but the general PVPing base thought it was a joke and didn't care about it due to the ease of exploiting how high someone could get it to go.

I'm not sure why they didn't remove it with NGE, but its still the same old brokedick system, just kill an alt for a month and you will /showPVP as the best PVPer in the game. Try it. I already did, just to see if it was the same old system. It is.
