Yes, but if you happen to "appear" a high level, you can respec to and from a certain proffession to actually get the skills associated. So its not as a simple as an "appearance" issue. People can respec, get the skills, and retain their gained levels. In fact, respeccing even helps you gain MORE levels (unless your already maxed at CL 90).
