What I really think of Jo'taur's Proposal

Post by Arev » Fri May 21, 2010 8:04 am

I attempted to be diplomatic with him, and he completely missed my points in my second response, but Mein Gott, that is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever read. He's a good guy, don't get me wrong, but when I first read that I facepalmed. Rhiana's assumptions about him were correct, he's a casual/amateur roleplayer. He falls under the logical fallacy that more elite = better roleplay. Frankly, even under the unlikely event that this did happen, I'd create basic requirements so that not every noob that joins RID doesn't join because they want to be "SupaTroopas". Because, here again, anything that is elite/restricted should be reserved for experienced roleplayers. Why? Because it would embarrass those roleplayers and their PA if they made fools out of themselves. Let's not forget continuity. Before Jo joined RID, for this "SupaEliteTIE Squadron" he made custom uniforms; none of which included the actual canonical Imperial uniform. *bangs head against desk* So, you can obviously see my reservation, not to mention the fake that he barely roleplays at all. Yes, I know there are problems, and yes, we're attempting to fix them, but he's attempting to cure a mosquito bite by cutting his arm off.

Again, he's a good guy, but his head is in another place when it comes to roleplay.

Yeah Jo'taur's a nice guy, but I agree he can get a bit carried away.

If you want the whole story, Jo'taur's proposal kind of originated from a little argument between him and Rhiana in guild chat.

Basically Rhiana was saying she could attend one of Apauck's Stormtrooper activities as a Stormtrooper. Of course, Jo'taur, who apparently felt persecuted by Rhiana's "over zealous" interpreation of canon in the Regal Squadron, starts going on about how female Stormtroopers don't exist in the Star Wars universe, or at the very least, are extremely rare.

So the two of them kind of start bantering in guild chat, nothing too heated. Rhiana basically says that George Lucas said female troopers exist, while Jo'taur keeps asking for the name of a specific female that was a Stormtrooper in the SW Universe. Apparently, no specific trooper exists, but Rhiana eventually found an obscure quote from George Lucas that said female troopers did exist, just in very limited capacity. So with that the argument ended, but Jo'taur still felt she was grasping at straws, especially after her aprehension for having more elite fighters in the Regal Squadron -- even in limited capacity.

So I think part of this is Jo'taur feels people are bending roleplay issues to their own advantage. So a few days later, he devised this Shadow Trooper thing. He talked to me about it, and I told him I'd relay his proposal on the Empire forums. He said it was all canon and that he feels it could bolster roleplay activity in RID. I told him that nothing is set in stone yet -- but in the meantime, I told him to help people get ranked up, so they could at least purchase the black Stormtrooper armor.

I think that even though this seems like another, "I wanna be leet" thing, we should make a compromise concerning this proposal. I say no cloaking devices, and just field them in limited capacity. In addition, it should be ensured that only dedicated RID members, not new ones, gain membership.

Try to look at this way. Maybe this is a chance to experiment certain things with RID. This could be our chance to safely gauge other guild's reactions regarding our decisions. If it's done right, who knows, maybe it could work out for the best. This isn't a one-way street. Like I said in the other thread, you got to pick your battles. Obviously things need to be turned down so that things don't get our of hand, but if we regulate things like this carefully, perhaps it could work for the best.

However, between you and me, I think Jo'taurs proposal for the Regal Squadron is better than his Shadow Trooper stuff. I think the Regal Squadron is far to restricting, and that it should allow for the piloting of Aggressors, Oppressors, Bombers, and in certain cases, RGI's. Sometimes you have to draw a line between what's fun and what's canon. So long as you don't have a million people flying around in JSF's or Bellabubs, it's not like expanding the squadron would make other guilds scoff at us.
