Possible fix for Navy while I'm away

I've had a couple of chances to log on over the last week or so, and am reminded of the sad state of affairs within my Division.

Since I don't expect to be very active for a while yet (busiest season ever at work), I have put a lot of thought into what to do.

Here are two thoughts, any others would probably be appreciated ;-)

In talking to the other regular PvP Pilots, [SUBJECT B] has offered to help. He is one of the best pilots on the server and a great guy. He does have his main in another guild, but I'm sure he would dedicate himself to the task, since RID has traditionally supplied excellent pilots in numbers for the events when things are running well. My thought was to (I can't believe I'm saying this) appoint him as Captain of the Navy. I think he has a shot at avoiding The Jinx, since this alt will not be his main and he's been around since pre-JTL. He would do the job under an alt that he believes is still in RID (haven't verified this yet), who I believe he said was Osiov or something like that. I don't think this would be permanent, just a band-aid while I'm gone. Again, for those who don't know him, he is extremely well-suited for this job and volunteered, wasn't asked.

Second, form a Marine Division and disband the Navy. As much as this thought bothers me for personal reasons, it is an idea worth considering. We have rarely had the numbers to support a true pilot division, and making it a pilot/soldier division may appeal to more RID. I would not accept command of this division, since I'm a spacer, but I'd help as much as I could. I would just like command of a Squadron within the Marines (no title required) to fill with other RID who want to specialize in Space PvP/content only.

I expect to be back to full-time SWG in a couple months, it is unreasonable to let a whole division fester in that time.

I wanted input from Lexx and all the other officers, you guys never let me down and help me put things in perspective.

Note: Lexx, if Rett doesn't have permission here please grant it so he can see this post :-)

Hmm.... Your ideas have some pros and cons to them.

For your first suggestion, I would have two major concerns about it. I'm not sure how crazy I am about putting a non-guild member in charge of one of our divisions. To me, it kind of opens a can of worms that can expose things we might not want brought into public light. (then again, you said he might already be in RID, if so then this problem could already exist...) I tihnk my other concern would be how would our fellow guild-mates feel about sticking a non-guild member in a leadership position? Especially those who have been with RID for some time. Admittedly, the position is demanding and at this point may require an outside expert hand, it might leave a bitter taste if a few mouths... On the plus side, having an experienced hand in charge of everything can't hurt and could definitely serve to rally the troops... err... pilots.

Perhaps a tweak on the idea? Appoint someone already in RID and is dedicated to the guild and see if [SUBJECT B] would be interested in training the new captain or working with him/her to redevelop the Navy. Just a thought. Then again, I have the feeling this is one of those ideas that sounds good on paper...

On the second idea you had, it could be a distinct possibility. However, how would you distinguish it from the Army? I guess it could be combined into the Army. Shiftie and Redaxe' are basically starting from scratch with the Army (ditto for Kioet' and Xoseh with Intelligence and soon to be Mikal and I with Commerce), so this might be a good time to roll everything together.

On the flip side, I don't know what their thoughts are on space and whether or not they even want to deal with it. I suppose if they're willing to make a concerted effort to lead space events as well, then it might work. Otherwise, I think keeping Navy as a seperate entity might be best. The problem there is who to make the Navy captain. Given some of the comments by a few guild members, I think we can find someone to give it a try, just don't know if they'd last in the position or not.

Both ideas have some merit, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks as well.

Like Kurke said, it has merit, but I just don't see this being implemented.

We have tons of members who'd love to fly in space events, or at the very least be gunners, but there's no one to put them in the Navy division and tell them when, where and what to do.

Putting a non-RID in charge of the division doesn't sit well with me, however having [SUBJECT B] help our guild is definitely a good idea... although we still should appoint a Naval Captains that's in the guild.

As for the Marine idea, it's a cool idea, but then the Army would have no point... unless the idea is to merge the Army and Navy in the marines, at which point I wouldn't know what to do with Shiftie and 'Redaxe who currently runs the Army. I'll ponder this, but keeping the two divisions would help display who does what in the guild. In the end, it's just a name, but we do have a good amount of pilots/gunners who would like to attend space events.

After talking with [SUBJECT B] more yesterday, he says he'll be using his main and leaving DFA if we do this. The only stumbling block is that he will be new to RID.

And yes, I pretty much had the same thoughts about the Marines. I just thought it sounded cool so I threw it out there. It would be a good idea for a new guild, but I agree we shouldn't mess up what we have.

Okay yeah, I just had some mental issue yesterday and forgot [SUBJECT B] alt ([SUBJECT B2]) is in RID.

If he leaves his current guild on [SUBJECT B], thats fine, or we can simply make [SUBJECT B2] the captain.

I plan on speaking with him today for some ideas.

Thanks :)

He was pretty definite about using [SUBJECT B] and leaving DFA, because he doesn't want to take the time to grind up [SUBJECT B2].

I hope you have good armor as I wouldn't be surprised if some guild members come at you with some torches and pitchforks...

I actually tried to reply to your thoughts earlier Kurke, but I ran out of time on lunch break, and the dam page wouldn't load. So here goes.

You have a good point, I will be sending out a guild mail tonight asking for applications for Navy Captain. If history is any example I will get 0 replies. If that is the case, then noone can bitch. If I do, every applicant will get a fair review, with time with RID being a factor. To be honest, noone has stepped up in the vacuum while I've been gone, and I don't know of any current RID that I would appoint (which is how I've traditionally filled the post).

In the end, I will do what is best for RID and the Navy. Time will tell what that is.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think this will be the likely outcome, but at least going through the process means no one can bitch.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't [SUBJECT B] use to be an RID pilot? He helped start up the navy division orginally and like Erougn said he is one of the best pilots on the server. As we keep saying, space is a whole different game and its not just gameplay. There is a cohesiveness between pilots that just doesn't exist between landlubbers. I know one of Erougn's biggest challenges has been dealing with the piloting community and keeping RID as a separate entity. I tried many times to get Erougn to make RID a squadron within the bigger Imperial Navy, but he would never budge (and I'm glad he did not as the RID navy later went on to make a name for itself as a piloting guild). Anyways, my point in this is that it is not a bad thing to bring in some fresh blood and the piloting community is open and mature enough that you don't have to deal with the same problems you would on the ground (spies, drama, lootwhores etc.) I think you guys have already come to a decision on this, but if it matters, [SUBJECT B] has my full support and I wish him luck.
