Hey does anyone know anything about peppers? I had this yellow one that was in this Haitian dish last night and it was freaking hot and I haven't been able to dins out what type it was. Anyone know anything?

What was the shape? Did it look like this?

If so, that's the habanero, commonly referred to in the Caribbean as the Scotch Bonnet. Until 2006 it was the hottest pepper known to man. They discovered a new pepper in India that is quite a bit hotter.

Chilis range in color from green to yellow to red depending on when you pick them. By the time they are red they are very ripe, and not quite so hot. There is only one extremely hot chili from the Caribbean, the Scotch Bonnet. Cuba is technically considered Latin America, and the second hottest pepper in the world is found there, the habanero. It has similliar shape to the Scotch Bonnet, color range, and is quite a few hundred thousand Scovilles hotter.

You also have to factor in your own whimper factor. Hot to you may not be hot to me. In all my travels, which included Cuba and the Caribbean, I have only seen two chilis that resemble what you describe, and it could be either of those.

Oh see now you're just teasing... ;)

Down in the messdecks on my last cruise some guys thought it'd be funny to doctor up my lunch with habanero sauce... Little did they know that I don't flinch until my hair's on fire (back when I had hair), and added more just for fun.

Its a miracle I don't have any ulcers yet.
