strange view from google maps
Post
by Mikal » Fri Mar 07, 2008 6:16 pm
So, I'm a former Navy Submariner, and I was cruising google maps. I decided to head over to Russia and see what the satelite view came up with. Very surprising that they have Typhoon, Akula, Oscar and Yankee (along with one I couldn't place from memory) class submarines on google maps satellite imagery. The "address" for them is 64.573216, 39.786258. Just type that into the address bar, go to satellite view, zoom in and cruise around the shoreline to check out some of Russia's finest military hardware.
I just thought it was cool hehe.

That's cool - I tried to find where I'm stationed at, but I only have a general idea of where I am at.

As a submariner that had to know those types of things, I learned where most every submarine base that our "enemies" operate out of, so that is how I knew where to look.
The easiest way to find yourself if you aren't quite sure where you are at is to look at Germany and find a town that you know you are near, even if it is a hundred miles away. Start looking in the direction that you know the base is, then zoom down to road level, look for a major road that goes nearby, then follow it even farther until you find yourself. Don't be surprised if you can't see anything though, most bases that aren't near the water or near the desert are hard to make out due to the amount of trees, and the fact that the government would rather not a place scream out "MILITARY BASE!!!! PLEASE BOMB ME!!!" And let's not forget clouds...my best friends house is invisible on both google and yahoo maps because a cloud is covering up their house in the picture lol.

Yeh I did 6 years in the silent service myself.
Cold war Reagan-style 1983 -1990
In a lotta ways the coolest time of my life...I'll never forget periscope leave at the North Pole, becoming a member of the ROP, sitting at the bottom of the Black Sea and getting sonar signitures for the USSR's main fleet. Now I can't remember most of my leaves in the Phillipines, but they were epic.
BTW my MOS was NT.

With all of the rating mergers that happened at the end of the 90's you would probably be an MM by now hehe. Forward half of boat is ET, MM, ST, and FT..and the MS's of course hehe

Nah, I had no problem finding my place in Germany. I'm in Iraq right now and of course the names of the villages nearby are not on the map. I know which city I am closest to and what direction as well as a general distance, the problem is that I know all the route names by their Army names.
