STAR WARS GALAXIES™ SERVER CLOSURE F.A.Q.

Which servers will be closing?

The following 12 servers will be closing on Thursday, October 15 2009:

- Corbantis

- Europe-Infinity

- Intrepid

- Kauri

- Kettemoor

- Lowca

- Naritus

- Scylla

- Tarquinas

- Tempest

- Valcyn

- Wanderhome

When will these 12 servers be closed?

These servers will be closing on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at 4:40 PM Pacific Time.

Why are you closing these 12 Star Wars Galaxies Servers?

The Free Character Transfer Service launched earlier this year with the intention of allowing players to transfer to servers with more active communities, creating a more vibrant and memorable Star Wars Galaxies gaming experience. The Free Character Transfer Service was a phenomenal success, leaving the less active servers in an undesirable position. In order to help streamline the current and new user experience, we have made the decision to close the less active servers and focus on the thriving Star Wars Galaxies servers.

Can I move my characters off of these servers?

Yes, you can move any character from the 12 identified servers up until Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 4:59 PM PT. Please see http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/freects/ for terms and conditions.

Will I be charged to move my characters from these servers?

No. If you take advantage of the Free Character Transfer Service before Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5:00 PM PT, you will not be charged to transfer your characters to one of the 13 destination servers including:

- Ahazi

- Bloodfin

- Bria

- Chilastra

- Eclipse

- Europe-Chimaera

- Europe-FarStar

- Flurry

- Gorath

- Radiant

- Shadowfire

- Starsider

- Sunrunner

Where can I find out more information on the Free Character Transfer Service?

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/freects/

What if my account is inactive/closed but I want to move my characters off of these servers?

You must reactivate your account by visiting the www.station.sony.com and entering a valid credit card or Game Time card. Once your account is active, paid, and in good standing you will be able to transfer your character using the Free Character Transfer Service through October 15, 2009.

What happens if I am not able to transfer my characters from these servers before October 15th 2009, can I move my characters after October 15th 2009?

Beginning October 16th, 2009 at 12:01 AM PT you will be able to contact Customer Support and for the standard Character Transfer fee of $50.00 you will be able to schedule a transfer for your character, eligible structures and inventory.

Please be aware that the Character Transfer Service from closed servers does not guarantee that all inventory items will be transferred. Due to the unique nature of moving a character from a closed server, the Character Transfer Service may take additional time to process.

For more information on the Character Transfer Service visit: https://store.station.sony.com/cts/...ertransfers.jsp

What if I don’t want to change servers?

Unfortunately, if you’re on a server that’s slated to be closed you will have to make the move in order to continue playing Star Wars Galaxies.

I like playing the game by myself and don’t care how many players are on my particular server at a given time. Can you just leave me be and let me keep playing?

Sorry, but in an effort to improve the gameplay experience for everyone, all characters on the identified servers must be moved. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the Free Character Transfer Service before October 15, 2009 so that you can move your character at no charge.

Does this mean you’re shutting down Galaxies?

No, not at all. We have lots of new content and updates planned for Galaxies and remain committed to making the game an enjoyable and engrossing experience. The server closure is an effort to improve the gameplay experience for all of our players.

I think that, as this is a step in the right direction, to me it signifies the begining of the end for galaxies. Granted SS is thriving, no server is and ever will be the same "people are everywhere" way that they once were.

To my old galaxy of Tarquinas, /salute. *taps is heard in the backround*

I saw this coming. I knew it was just puffery when they kept saying, "we have no plans to shut down servers."

They ARE dead servers and do need to be closed.

I'm hoping this doesn't signify any end to SWG though.

Of course you saw it coming lol. It was inevitable. It would cost them way to much in resources to keep a server open for 10 people than to just close it down and have them transfer. I forsee an influx of server transfers coming to SS as it is the server with the highest population.

Hmmm...I guess this means we'll have to start kicking people off of Starsider then.

Xeno, you're the first to go! To Bria with you. :)

you are talking about promotion in media which is my job :D every single day. Silly you, so here are my opinions.

I think that if the amount of servers in star wars galaxies now represents the amount of players in the current games population it will be better not worse for the game. Lots of servers look great im sure on a piece of paper to the big bosses but i can bet the finance people have been looking at ways to trim star wars galaxies down to make it a more viable project this is what their job involves.

If we are all honest answering, when were the servers ever really really full to absolute bursting point ? Im sorry they were not ever that full or near as full as im sure sony thought they would be when they started to make the game.

I think that the Sony marketing people have always felt that star wars galaxies should have been doing a lot better than it was doing. This is why there have been so many gameplay changes (you don't ever change something unless the business model or idea, concept isn't working as well as you thought it would) I deal with this sort of thing in my job in media at work everyday (its so so infuriating) so i can see how this has affected star wars galaxies over the years and why the constant changes have been made by game designers to try to appease the finance and project handling departments. The changes don't and wont make any sense to players but that's because they are playing the game every day unlike the marketing people who will hire individual game testers who probably aren't used to playing star wars galaxies at all. Star wars galaxies is a complicated game to understand for a new player. It takes a long while to build up your character and understand what your character needs and how to get it. This is why there is now no decay. Decay was a real/game world way of representing things breaking over time. Unfortunately for traders there are less of them than there are other professions and the decay wasn't fun for anyone in game. Even if it did offer a way of trader people in game to make money. Decay was never ever "fun" for a big number of players to enjoy.

There are im sure lots more changes to come but i bet they wont be as drastic as they have ever been before. Because star wars galaxies is now a lot more fragile than it was years ago and if and when there is a star wars alternative universe to play in i imagine you will see lots of very very exciting changes in star wars galaxies just before that other games release to complete with swtor and try to keep star wars galaxies customers loyal to sonys game. You wait and see i would bet arevs ship on it :P

I think star wars galaxies now has a following of people that have achieved so much in the game they almost feel like they cant go or leave behind what they have achieved. So while i can see a lot of people have left i think the game will (if it hasn't already ) reach a more steady population of people.

I think even if the game had 50000 subscribers / players across all of the servers the game would continue to be sold as a product by sony. 50000 x $15 every month is a lot of money.

The problems would have started when the license that sony has drawn up with Lucasarts to produce star wars galaxies run out, but looking at swtor being released as a completely different star wars time era it just shows to me anyway that lucasarts must want there to be both games out there. Its not about star wars or being loyal to people its about money if you dont believe me go here
http://www.starwars.com/ on this webpage there are 14 individual links to purchasing star wars (14 on one page and thats not including link through ads to products !!!!!!!!)

Swtor is set in a different star wars time era which would suggest to me that Sony still have been given or had the rights from Lucasarts to continue to produce a star wars game that represents the star wars characters we all see in the old star wars films. So i would say even if swtor is a run away success there will always be a certain set of people that will play star wars galaxies. Im sure the people at lucasarts, bioware and sony are very pleased they have different products to market.

I do have a close work related friend at Sony that has a station pass that allows her to play sony's games for free as a employee special privilege. (Free gaming every month wow)

I think sony will re-evaluate star wars galaxies when swtor is released
